About the group

The orchestra welcomes anyone with lived experience of drug or alcohol use, who can play an instrument to a confident beginners level. We also welcome people who work or volunteer in drug and alcohol services.

We use the word orchestra in the original sense of the word – we are a diverse collection of musicians making music together. Our pieces range from Rage Against the Machine, Beethoven, Abdullah Ibrahim, and a co-devised piece every term. We have guitarists, wind and string players, percussionists, an accordion and more.

Our members include people who haven’t played music since childhood, people who stepped away from music because of drugs and alcohol, and those who have found music later through recovery.

The orchestra regular performs at our end of term shows, alongside our other groups. Performances are optional, but are members tell us they can be a great way to build confidence and self-esteem.

Who can join our groups?

Our groups are open to anyone with lived experience of drug or alcohol use—whether that’s recent or from 30 years ago. We also welcome people who work or volunteer in drug and alcohol services to join Bristol Recovery Orchestra or Rising Voices Choir, as we know it benefits staff mental health and working practice.

What our members say

Creative Communities are the backbone of my recovery. I’m in the choir and orchestra, which meet weekly to rehearse. I love music, and singing with others gives me a real sense of belonging. I can get support from people who understand what living with addiction or alcoholism can be like. Being part of these groups gives me pride, and it’s brilliant to show my family and the public how well we can perform.
Bristol Recovery Orchestra is incredibly important to a lot of people and gives them a creative outlet, stability, purpose, belonging and hope. It is living proof that music can heal.
