Changing Tunes Beginners Music is our weekly music group open to total beginners. This smallgroup welcomes individuals with lived experience of drug or alcohol use, or those who have been involved in the criminal justice system.
The group is a supportive environment where group members can learn new skills in playing an instrument, connect with others who have had similar experiences, and enjoy making music together in a relaxed, judgment free space. Two facilitators are on hand to help you learn the basics of your instrument.
This group has learnt and performed iconic songs from Cat Stevens, Oasis to Portishead. While performing is always optional, we like to encourage it — as it’s a great way to build confidence and experience a real sense of collective and individual achievement.
Who can join our groups?
Our groups are open to anyone with lived experience of drug or alcohol use—whether that’s recent or from 30 years ago. We also welcome people who work or volunteer in drug and alcohol services to join Bristol Recovery Orchestra or Rising Voices Choir, as we know it benefits staff mental health and working practice.

The Changing Tunes beginners music sessions have been fantastic. The facilitators have been very supportive from day one. Learning the guitar in a real music studio has been a great experience. I’ve wanted to learn guitar all my life and finally have learnt enough that I will always play it.
